New: COO in Raleigh, North Carolina

This search is for another of the two leading firms in Raleigh and not to be confused with the earlier Raleigh search for an Executive Director this year. This is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership team as the Chief Operating Officer of a superb, leading law firm in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. The location is as ideal as the firm itself – two hours from the beaches or the mountains.

The firm is guided by the following principles:

  • Never forget our formula for success.
  • Act professionally and ethically at all times.
  • Our clients’ best interests always come first.
  • Listen.
  • Our success should never be measured solely by the bottom line.
  • Our most valuable asset is our people.
  • Quality is mission critical; quantity is not.
  • The right size of the firm.
  • Think outside the box.
  • Allocate resources optimally for clients.
  • Commit to excellent client service.
  • Teamwork
  • Earn respect; we cannot expect or demand it.
  • Avoid complacency.
  • Treasure our existing clients.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Be involved in our communities.
  • Add value.
  • Maintain professional and personal balance.
  • Well-being.

The incumbent is retiring at the end of the year. The COO reports directly to the Managing Partner and has responsibility for the firm’s overall administration, including accounting and finance, operations, information technology, human resources and facilities management. The successful candidate will have excellent academic credentials, proven executive and management skills and experience (preferably in a law firm environment), a strong background in law firm economics and profitability, and the skills to serve as the principal administrator of a successful law firm. Especially important are financial analytical skills and strategies, along with knowledge of marketplace challenges facing law firms in this hyper-competitive environment, including strategy, pricing, lateral acquisition, and a big-picture view of what technology can do to assist the firm’s practitioners and serve the communication and legal services needs of its clients.

The highly-competitive compensation package is commensurate with the position and responsibilities. Please email your resume in strict confidence, along with salary requirements, to our consultants, Altman Weil., Inc., at, and specify Department A1033 in the subject line.
